Terrestrial carbon sinks, including forests, grasslands and wetlands, are essential for mitigating climate change by absorbing CO2. Under the Land Use, Land Use Change and Forestry Regulation (LULUCF), the sector aims to enhance the net carbon sink by storing an additional 310 MtCO2eq by 2030. In this context, the EU-funded EARTHONE project addresses the challenge of preserving the Earth’s natural terrestrial greenhouse gas (GHG) sinks by examining how socio-economic, demographic and physical factors influence GHG fluxes. Focusing on vulnerable areas in southern and Mediterranean Europe (such as Croatia, Greece, Italy, North Macedonia, Slovenia and Spain), the project team uses cutting-edge technology and living laboratories to develop effective solutions and guidelines for LULUCF stakeholders.
