Nem Summit 2019, Zagreb, Croatia, 22th-23th May 2019

The 11th edition of NEM Initiative annual conference Nem European Media Summit (Nem Summit) 2019 is organized this year in The Mimara Museum of Zagrab (Croatia) from 22 to 23 May 2019. NEM Initiative is the New European Media Technology Platform that organizes the NEM Summit 2019 conference, consisting in keynote presentations and an exhibition focused on presentating results of various research projects.

Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) participated in the event through the figure of Federico Álvarez García. Federico Álvarez and Mario Montagud (from i2Cat) discussed in a roundtable (Session B-2) with different speakers about accessibility in Europe towards the creation of a platform for inclusive media, as partners of the Accessibility Cluster Projects: ImAc, EasyTV, Content4All and SIGN-HUB. EasyTV is coordinated by UPM. Additionally, Federico Álvarez collaborated in another roundtable (Session A-1) about Artificial Intelligence for media and creative industries, presenting some of the works developed in his research group in this field.

On the other side, researcher Massimo Magaldi from the italian company Engineering talked about Advanced analytics services developed in the environment of FANDANGO H2020 Project to detect disinformartion and fake news. UPM is also partner of FANDANGO Project.

José Manuel Menéndez, director of research group GATV, attended to the event, and collaborated in the session “All in the media & Creative Industries”.

Visit to the CCMA studios of the EasyTV Consortium

New EasyTV H2020 Project Consortium Meeting in CCMA, Barcelona, 5-6th March 2019

The new “EasyTV: Easing the access of Europeans with disabilities to converging media and content” H2020 Project consortium meeting took place in the headquarters of Corporació Catalana de Mitjans Audiovisuals (CCMA) in Barcelona during the dates 5-6th March 2019 with attendance of representatives from all the partners. Federico Álvarez, Silvia Uribe and Francisco Moreno attended the GATV reaserch group and María Poveda and Pablo Calleja from OEG (Ontology Engineering Group) reasearch group, both from Universidad Politécnica de Madrid. In the meeting, the partners shared their last advances in accessibility technologies for improving life of european people.

During the plenary meeting an interesting visit to the studios of CCMA broadcaster took place, highlighting the advances in accessibility developed by the technical department.

“Media Convergence and Social Media Concentration Meeting” event in Brussels, 6th February 2019

On February 6th, in Brussels, “EasyTV: Easing the access of Europeans with disabilities to converging media and content” project’s representatives joined other EU-funded project teams to discuss and share, to learn from each other and to find synergies and possibilities for future collaborations. This Concertation meeting is a follow up of the one of previous year’s, and this time new participants form recently launched projects are welcomed to participate.

The senior researcher Silvia Uribe from Grupo de Aplicación de Telecomunicaciones Visuales (GATV) attended the event representing the European H2020 Project EasyTV, because Universidad Politécnica de Madrid is a partner in this research for creating technological tools to facilitate access to information of people with disabilites in our continent. The project is part of the collection of 26 funded projects selected for sharing their skills in this event.

Other interesting projects in the event included ImAc about immersive accessibility and SOMA (Social Observatory for Disinformation and Social Media Analysis). Following the European Commission Communication on tackling online disinformation, SOMA has been launched to provide support to a European community that will jointly fight disinformation! For that reason, the observatory supports experts in their work against disinformation providing useful infrastructure and connection with a wide community of experts to collaborate in specific tasks.

Easy TV european project in Access Services Experts Group Meeting in Geneva, 9th November 2018

The project Easy TV: Easing the access of Europeans with disabilities to converging media and content coordinated by Universidad Politécnica de Madrid was presented in the meeting of the European Braodcasting Union (EBU) for the Access Services Experts Group last 9th November 2018 in Geneva (Switzerland).Francesc Mas from Corporació Catalana de Mitjans Audiovisuals (CCMA) presented the project demonstrating the capabilities of HbbTV and broadcasting services for offering innovative accessibility tools, including the synchronization of second screen devices for improving the user’s experience.

The EBU Access Services Experts Group brings together broadcast professionals from access services such as subtitling, signed programmes, audio description, automations, accessibility in new platforms and audio subtitling which enable sensory handicapped people to access public broadcasters’ content all over Europe. This group meets once a year to discuss important issues in access services with contributions from RTS, SWISS TXT, France TV, NPO, RBB, DW, SVT, NRK, DR, MDR, BBC, RED BEE MEDIA, the European Federation of Hard of Hearing, the Royal National Institute of the Blind or CCMA.

The partners of EasyTV Project around the world

2nd Consortium Meeting of EasyTV H2020 European Project in Thessaloniki, 9th-10th July 2018

During the dates 9th-10th July 2018 took place in the headquarters of CERTH in Thessaloniki (Greece), the 2nd Consortium Meeting of H2020 European Project EasyTV, that is coordinated by Universidad Politécnica de Madrid.

The 10th month of the project is running and the review will be soon, so this meeting had the presentation of some of the first developments, including an HbbTV application for second screens with functionalities for customizable subtitles, clean audio or image enhancement (UPM), an application for speech recognition to interact with voice through television and other devices (MediaVoice) and customizable interface for presenting video contents through 2nd screen devices (ARX.NET).

Other presentations included the architecture of the EasyTV Platform by broadcaster CCMA, sign language recognition and generation of signs in 3D environments by CERTH, development of ontologies for sign language by the Ontology Engineering Group of UPM or test with users by UAB.

At the end of the meeting a fun 360º photograph was taken with all the partners. Check the result!!

The meeting finished with a social event based on a dinner in traditional restaurant Charoúpi in downtown Thessaloniki.
